(More customer reviews)I have to say, given the quality of other TNG 'uniforms' on Amazon, most of which are of similar price, this one takes the cake! When I first got mine, all I could think was 'wow, they really knew what they were doing!'
The stitching is straight and clean, not sloppy and uneven like uniforms I've had in the past. The quality of the shirt itself is better then I dared hope for and the color and pattern are almost perfectly accurate to that of the show. The rank pips and comm badge are very well made too. The pips are simple pins with a fastener on the back. They include four solid gold ones and one black with gold outline. This allows you to become any rank you can think of, from chief (black with gold outline), ensign (one solid gold), lieutenant jr grade (one solid gold followed by one black), lieutenant (two gold), lieutenant commander (two gold followed by one black), commander (three gold), and of course captain (four gold). You cannot, of course, use admiral ranks as those would require different pins. The pips themselves stay on very well and though the fastener is close to, if not right up against your skin, you do not feel it and it is a very comfortable fit. They will not come off by accident, believe me I've been testing them.
The badge is a different story. It is not held on by a fastener but rather by a pin with a rotating lock. It's annoying to get the slot rotated to where you need it so you can unclip it and within the first few minutes of my using it the clip came completely off badge. This is not a big deal, as there are two holes in the metal backing of the clip that fit onto the studs from the back of the badge. Simply attach and you're good to go. However, since it is a PIN, it does not stay snug against the uniform and instead dangles a few centimeters from the shirt. This, I have found, gives it an air of being cheap and makes it look less authentic. My advise? Take the back off the badge so all that is left is the plastic badge itself. Throw out the metal clip. Get two round magnets like the kind found on refrigerators and glue one to the back of the badge using gorilla or modeling glue. If you can get small enough magnets like I have, they will not be even slightly visible on the back of the badge. Once the glue dries, position the badge on your shirt, reach under and put the other magnet behind your shirt and there you go. Easy as that. This approach also makes it easier to position and straighten out the badge, a problem I was getting very annoyed with when the clip was attached. As for the quality of the badge I was quite surprised to find it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's not a crappy paint job, it's really quite nice. Show accurate colors and size. Well, it's a little bit smaller than the real props used on the show, but that's just nit picking.
My only other problem is the lack of armpits. Not really armpits, but that's the best description I can give. When you move your arms up, the shirt goes up with you. So wear something under this. In that aspect, they made it too MUCH like the real costumes! Anyone ever heard of the 'Picard Maneuver'? Watch TNG sometime and see if you can count how many times in one episode they pull down their shirt after standing up or sitting down. This is not a problem with the costume, it's the way it had to be made. If you want the real thing, it's here.
So overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a Star Trek costume for Halloween, or if not Halloween do as I do and wear it around town. To the mall, to the grocery store. Confuse the general public. It's fun. =) But yes, VERY well made, I am 100% satisfied!!! Buy it, you won't be sorry!
Oh, just one thing. This shirt is not meant to be tucked in and it is not meant to be loose. Consider this when selecting your size. It should be tight, but not too tight. Also, it zips up in the back, again just like the real costumes on the show did, so this is not a pull-it-over-your-head-yay-it's-on shirt. This is the real deal.
Live long and prosper. =)
